January is Poverty Awareness Month, a time dedicated to understanding the critical issue of poverty and mobilizing efforts to help those affected. Here’s a closer look at the problem, its prevalence, and some strategies for reducing it.
What Is Poverty?
Poverty is a multifaceted condition characterized by a severe lack of financial resources and access to basic necessities of life such as food, safe housing, clean water, education, and healthcare. It extends beyond mere economic deprivation to encompass social and psychological dimensions, often resulting in limited opportunities, social exclusion, and a diminished capacity to participate fully in society. Those in poverty experience a persistent cycle of hardship and struggle, impacting individuals, families, and communities across generations.
A Closer Look: Poverty Statistics
In the United States, poverty is measured by the federal poverty line (FPL), which differs based on family size. In 2023, the FPL was set at an income of $14,580 for individuals and $24,860 for a family of three. According to the US Census Bureau, “the official poverty rate in 2022 was 11.5 percent, with 37.9 million people in poverty.”
Here in Indiana, the poverty rate is higher than the national average, coming in at 12.6%. And, in west central Indiana, those rates are even higher, with a range of 13.7%-19.2%. This highlights the need for targeted solutions — not only on the national level, but in our local communities as well.
Poverty Solutions
Addressing poverty requires a multifaceted approach. The programs at Catholic Charities Terre haute seek to address several of the solutions below:
Here at Catholic Charities Terre Haute, we are promoting these solutions and more through our range of programs designed to address the various aspects of poverty. We offer education programs through Ryves Youth Center, safe shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness through Bethany House Emergency Shelter, and services and programs that promote nutrition and well-being through Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank. Our comprehensive approach not only addresses the immediate needs of the impoverished, but also works toward long-term solutions by empowering individuals and families in our community.
